Telling tales of vine-choked trees and eagle nests big enough to nap in, school counselor Cissie Brooks transfixed Wrightsville Beach Elementary’s fifth-grade science class on Wednesday – from 400 miles away.

Thanks to technology, a good Internet connection and a little patience, Brooks will share her experiences as a temporary volunteer at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Maryland all week long via her blog and a videoconferencing service online.
“I’m trying to show them what I’m doing and answer their questions,” said Brooks, who is also the school’s marine science coordinator. “I want to give them something to think about.”
